“THE MAGA KIDS ARE NOT ALL WHITE”

“THE MAGA KIDS ARE NOT ALL WHITE”

In January 2025, New York Magazine published a cover story titled “The Cruel Kids’ Table,” using a photo from the Power 30 Awards in Washington, D.C.—an event CJ Pearson co-hosted. But when the cover ran, the image was cropped in a way that removed multiple Black attendees, including Pearson himself, creating the impression of an all-white political scene.

The controversy sparked immediate backlash online, with Pearson calling out the edit as narrative-driven erasure—fueling a broader debate around identity politics, media framing, and the assumption that conservatism is inherently white, even when its coalitions and leaders are more diverse in reality. What started as a cover photo quickly became a defining flashpoint for how politics, perception, and cultural power are shaped in real time.
